It inevitably is a team endeavor with many participants from the design professions and geographic sciences, linked by technology from several locations for rapid communication and feedback, and reliant on transparent communication with the people affected by change. These demands create opportunities for geodesign and the need for organizing that collaboration. Be able to place spatial and geographic knowledge into an ethical context, especially how spatial sciences and geodesign principles can contribute to the resolution of ethical, social, and environmental issues. Geodesign brings together geographic information science (GIS), big data, science, computational power, architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning and more to address challenges and issues presented by the built environment.

Her professional work is centered upon designing public landscapes with and for the Deaf and disabled communities, applying legal standards and Universal Design principles alongside lived experience and direct participation in the design process. Students are expected to take the Qualifying Exam before the beginning of the fourth year. The exam focuses on a dissertation prospectus that a student develops with their primary advisor and in consultation with their PhD committee. Each student’s PhD committee consists of at least two members of the Standing Committee and one outside member from another department at the University (and a member of the Faculty Senate). All committees are comprised of at least three members of UCLA Academic Senate.

Students combine the research from assignment 2 with the images from assignment 1 to create an infographic. Students self-select a number of researched facts and information to include in an information graphic that clearly communicates a factual reality. The infographic must include text and images about the region’s key figures, ethnic groups, religions, and culture. It should represent the human perspective of the region in an original, eye-catching form and should represent students’ understanding of how the principles of design influence an audience’s perception (i.e. the power of an image). I chose Geodesign because of its solution oriented approach to cities and sustainability.
Students adapt their narrative from the previous assignment into a presentation to illustrate their work in a meaningful way. The class will first review examples of sequential art, with a focus on conveying cause and effect and changes over time. This review should include selecting still or video images that illustrate the current event and related social issue/s.

The prospectus includes an argument with broad implications, demonstrates that the dissertation will make a contribution of knowledge and ideas to the field, demonstrates mastery of existing literature and discourses, and includes a plan and schedule for completion. The courses in the program constitute 21 quarter credit hours in total, and tuition is set at $450/credit. Tuition and fees are the same for California residents, out-of-state students, and international students. Geodesign gives us a framework for a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of our decisions on the planet—and for using this information to make the world a better place. It will help us make more logical, scientific, sustainable, and forward-looking decisions. Globalization, population growth, climate change, and increasing demands for resources are serious problems. Geodesign makes design decisions with renewable energy and zero-carbon without disrupting the food and water supply. So when design can incorporate GIS, it can enrich architectural design that is diverse to withstand shifts in climate.
